Devil’s Shadows returns Chrístõ to Derbyshire and the caverns where Humphrey’s Earth relatives live, as seen in the story “Devil’s Cavern’ a little while before. This time, people are dying in Castleton.

The idea that an image can be seen on the retinas of a dead person is nonsense, of course. That is the one weak part of this story. But then again, it is a story about a man from another planet who is hunting darkness entities that kill with negative emotions. It isn’t much of a stretch of credulity.

It has been remarked that this story is a bit similar to the previous story involving the caverns and the boggarts. And that is true to some extent. Mainly because the readers ASKED for a return story, set in the present day. So I gave them what they wanted.

The difference, of course, is that the villain of the peace IS another ‘boggart’, one who kills with negative emotions. And, while last time, it was Freddie who was the hero, this time, it was Sammie who came up trumps. The only way to kill a boggart is with bright light. And Sammie, with his armoury, could do that. A flashbang, NFDD (Noise and Flash Diversionary Device) or stun grenade, emitting a loud noise and an actinic white light intended to stun terrorists while not injuring their hostages, would kill the creature. As long as he could stand his ground and not be scared to death. But Sammie was SAS. They don’t scare easily.

There was a problem of whether they SHOULD kill the creature. As with the Basilisk, they were killing a unique creature, not something Chrístõ would do easily. When they ASK Humphrey what they should do, it is not just a piece of fill in dialogue. It is an important detail.
